Tomato Juice, Anyone?


A healthy drink does not need to be expensive, fuzzy or complicated.  Fresh tomato is one of the most common vegetable that we can find in our fridge.  But did you know that scientifically, tomato is actually a fruit? Fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower and carry the seeds of the plant.  However, as far as cooking is concerned, tomato is a vegetable. 

You can find tomato in almost every dish that we have and it becomes gourmets’ favourite.  Moms love to include this in almost every meal for many reasons: it is nutritious, it tastes good, it is cheap and it brings nice red colour in the dish.  When tomatoes are cooked, it liquifies and blends in to the rest of the ingredients thus the moms can sneakingly mix the vegetable to the dish without being noticed by kids who hates vegetables.

Tomato is a wonder fruit [or vegetable - for those who still want to argue] and it gives miraculous benefits whether cooked or eaten fresh.  I read an article that when a tomato is cooked and subjected to a high heat, it releases a certain antioxidant substance [lycopene, I think] that is good to prevent and fight some form of cancers.  Having this food in almost every meal that we eat, we unknowingly saved ourselves from sickness and that is something that we have to thank our mothers for it.

When I was growing up, my grandmother would eat one or two tomatoes a day.  She told me that it was her secret to her beautiful skin.  She encouraged me to do the same if I want to have a good skin and healthy body.  She said that a tomato a day will keep the doctors away.  I told her that is it not an apple a day will keep the doctors away?  She amusingly said that tomatoes are way cheaper than apple but she can still keep the doctors away at a fraction of a price.  When my grandmother died at 93 years old, she retained her soft and firm skin unlike some older folks that I know.   

Nutritionists keep on telling us that fruits and vegetables are good for our body.  Tomatoes, for instance, helps in eye care, good stomach health, regulating blood pressure, and it helps prevent diabetes and skin problems.  According to some experts, it also stimulate blood circulation, reduce cholesterol levels, protects our kidneys, detoxify our bodies and prevents premature aging.  Unlike pharmaceutical products with long list of side effects, vegetables and fruits are great in our bodies.

Tomatoes can easily be planted at our backyard or even in the plant boxes or used cans.  Just put soil and the dried seeds and you’ll have a tomato plant sooner than you think.  This plant can virtually grow anywhere and it is low maintenance.  It requires just a little soil and water.  It does not require much of your time or attention.

When we drink the juiced form of fruits or vegetables,  we give our bodies a favour for it can be absorbed immediately after consumption.  It does not need to be digested in the normal way.  We reap the benefit almost instantly.  For those who are rushing or too lazy to chew, juicing is good for you.

Freshly juiced tomatoes are way cheaper than any juice that are produced by manufacturers. This cheap yet powerful drink is not hard to reach or difficult to do.  You can use a juicer or a blender or you can just simply crush it and, hola, you have that healthy drink.  Before I drink this thing, tomato juice, anyone?
